Building a New Home for Islam in Madison
Our Project for the Future of the Community
The Masjid Us-Sunnah, located in the southwest side of Madison Wisconsin, was purchased in September 1995 and has been a home to Muslims for 20 years. Over the years the community has grown significantly and the small building has long since been filled to capacity. The time to move on has come.
In January of 2012 a 3.5 acre parcel of land was purchased on Madison’s west side at 6510 Watts Rd. In addition to the land, the abandoned two-story building located on the eastern side of the newly acquired property was acquired as well. This land is minutes away from several large apartment complexes, shopping centers, and a central highway that connects much of Madison together.
By autumn of 2012, volunteers cleaned the inside of the abandoned building thoroughly and had removed brush and trees to make the building usable in the future. The Project Committee began planning options for the building’s renovation and by spring 2013, those renovations neared completion. In the summer of the same year, volunteers finished the interior of the building, making it ready for use, and shortly thereafter the City of Madison issued a permit for its occupancy.
In autumn, the Qur’an School programs initiated by Imam Alhagie moved from Masjid Us-Sunnah to the newly remodeled building on Watts road, allowing space for the inclusion of additional classes, students, and teachers. The number of students correspondingly tripled in just a few months.
Over the past few years, community leaders have worked with various companies and the city of Madison to complete the required plans and obtain the needed permits to begin construction.
With most of the civil engineering and architectural work completed, in December 2016 we finally hired a contractor in preparation to begin building in the upcoming spring 2017.
